Climate and law: Roger Cox on the radio
A few weeks ago, our climate lawyer Roger Cox appeared on two radio programs, where he spoke at length with Jan van Poppel and Floortje Smit.
These radio appearances can now be listened to again.
Would you like to know more about the work Roger and his team do and how the law can offer protection against the dangers of climate change? Then the episodes below are worth listening to.
Dreamers! with Roger Cox on climate justice
“In Dreamers!, host Jan van Poppel spends three hours every night talking to one guest! Five dreamers who, each in their own way, dream of a better world!
Tonight, Jan talks to ‘climate lawyer’ Roger Cox. A title he earned when he took the Dutch state to court on behalf of Urgenda in 2015. He is living proof that as an individual you can indeed make a difference in the fight against climate change.
They discuss how he came up with the revolutionary idea, how he won the case, and where his inexhaustible drive comes from to put everything aside for years, day and night, in the fight for climate justice.”

Brainwash Summer Radio with Roger Cox
“In Brainwash Summer Radio, Floortje Smit interviews creators and thinkers based on the music they bring with them. This time: Roger Cox
Roger Cox does his work as a climate lawyer not out of idealism, but out of necessity. ”It’s like jumping into the water after someone who is drowning,” he says. He can’t do anything else. After seeing the documentary An Inconvenient Truth in 2006, he could no longer look away. He devoted all his free time to studying the climate problem and the relevant areas of law. This led him to find an innovative way to force governments and large companies to reduce their CO2 emissions: through the Duty of Care.
No one is allowed to create dangers for others when you can reasonably prevent them. With that, Cox started a revolution through the courts: in 2015, he won a case against the Dutch state and in 2021 against Shell, which inspired people worldwide to file their own lawsuits. Now, together with Milieudefensie, he is setting his sights on ING.”
